  • No. Mater Pelvic Care is an out-of-network, cash-pay provider that does not directly bill insurance. This allows us to provide you with the highest quality of care without insurance dictating what treatment is and is not reimbursed. We can provide you with a detailed receipt upon request that you can submit to insurance for out-of-network reimbursement. The receipt will include all the medical information your insurance company would need to provide possible reimbursement. Payment is due at the time of service in cash, credit, debit card, check, Flexible Savings Account or Health Savings Account (FSA/HSA), and Venmo.

  • An internal examination is never a requirement, and our top priority is ensuring you feel safe and comfortable throughout your appointment.

Pelvic floor physical therapists perform internal examinations vaginally or rectally to get a better understanding of what your muscles are doing. Without feeling the muscles, it can be tricky (but not impossible) to better understand whether your pelvic floor muscles are tight, weak, and what happens when you try to use them. All of these factors may be contributing to the symptoms you are experiencing. For that reason, pelvic floor physical therapists often recommend an internal pelvic examination. We do not use a speculum. We perform our exams with a gloved, lubricated finger.

We will always explain why we want to do an internal examination and what you can expect if we perform the examination and allow you to consent or decline the exam. Depending on where you are in your pregnancy or postpartum journey, your main complaint bringing you to PT, and what your physical therapist learns by speaking with you, an internal pelvic exam may or may not be indicated.

  • No need to change your appointment! We can still do everything during a visit that we would usually do. If you prefer to defer any external or internal pelvic floor assessments or treatment while on your period, just let us know, and we can focus on other treatments during that session. Additionally, we would not perform an internal pelvic exam if you have a UTI or yeast infection.

  • Anytime! Seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist during pregnancy can help prevent pelvic pain from arising and has been shown to reduce the likelihood and severity of common postpartum symptoms like urinary incontinence, diastasis recti (separation of the abs), and sexual dysfunction. If you are not having problems but are interested in learning more, we can discuss exercise or activity modifications, preparation for labor and childbirth, and strategies for postpartum recovery.

  • We typically see people as early as three weeks postpartum for the first postpartum visit. We do not perform an internal examination at this time, but this is an excellent opportunity to check in with your body, begin addressing any symptoms you are experiencing, and start foundational rehab. We then recommend following up after your 6-week appointment with your provider.

  • Absolutely! Enduring pelvic floor issues could last decades! It is never too late to restore your core and pelvic floor and regain control of your body. We love helping moms achieve an active and healthy lifestyle to be able to do all the physically demanding things that come along with motherhood.
